Talyllyn Railway
The Talyllyn Railway runs from the Cardigan bay coast at Tywyn up the Fathew valley into the mountains of Snowdonia and is built on a narrow gauge of 2 feet 3 inches. The railway was built in the 19th century to carry slate from the Bryn Eglwys quarries near Abergynolwyn. Opened in 1865, the line runs the seven and a quarter miles from Tywyn (on the Cardigan Bay coast) to Nant Gwernol up the valley. From Nant Gwernol a series of horse-drawn tramways continued into the mountains. Following the line's closure in 1946 following a serious rock fall in the quarry, a society was formed to preserve the line. The railway has connections with the Rev. Awdry who wrote the Thomas the Tank Engine books.
This attraction can be easily visited whilst staying in the Conwy Valley, and is 37 miles (60 km) from Betws-y-Coed as the crow flies (straight line distance). See the routeplanner below for a suggested route and estimated journey time.
