Trefriw Woollen Mills
Manufacturers of Welsh double weave (tapestry) bedspreads (carthenni) and tweeds.
The mill carries out all the processes from raw wool to bedcovers, i.e. blending, carding, spinning, doubling, dyeing, warping and weaving, using their own electricity generated by water turbines. Thomas Williams bought the mill in 1859. His descendants still own and operate it.
Weaving and the 1930/1940 hydro-electric turbines can be viewed, and there is a large mill shop and a tearoom. Some displays are not always available - please see website or phone for details.
This attraction can be easily visited whilst staying in the Conwy Valley, and is 4 miles (7 km) from Betws-y-Coed as the crow flies (straight line distance). See the routeplanner below for a suggested route and estimated journey time.
