Plas Newydd | Llanfairpwll

This mansion house includes the largest collection of Rex Whistler works and a military museum with relics from the Battle of Waterloo. There are large gardens and woodland walks in a picturesque setting at the edge of the Menai Straits which separate the Isle of Anglesey from the mainland.

This elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century and is an interesting mixture of classical and Gothic. The comfortable interior, restyled in the 1930s, is famous for its association with Rex Whistler, whose largest painting is here. The military museum contains campaign relics of the 1st Marquess of Anglesey, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There is a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, as well as a summer terrace and, later, massed hydrangeas and autumn colour. A woodland walk gives access to a marine walk beside the Menai Strait.

This attraction can be easily visited whilst staying in the Conwy Valley, and is 19 miles (31 km) from Betws-y-Coed as the crow flies (straight line distance). See the routeplanner below for a suggested route and estimated journey time.
