Snowdon Mountain Railway
Snowdon dominates the glorious, ancient landscape of North Wales. At 3,560ft (1085m) it is a true mountain and a place of legend - said to be the burial place of the giant ogre Rhita, vanquished by King Arthur. Since 1896, the Snowdon Mountain Railway has been making it easy to claim this mountain peak. In a tremendously ambitious feat of engineering, and uniquely in Britain, a rack and pinion railway was built which rises to within 66ft of the summit of the highest mountain in England and Wales.
Trains run to the summit subject to weather conditions. The Summit Station is the usual destination between early May and the end of October. Trains may be operated by steam or diesel traction.
This attraction can be easily visited whilst staying in the Conwy Valley, and is 13 miles (22 km) from Betws-y-Coed as the crow flies (straight line distance). See the routeplanner below for a suggested route and estimated journey time.
