Welsh Highland Railway
The Welsh Highland Railway features the most powerful 2' gauge steam locomotives in the world on a journey through the scenic Snowdonia National Park from Caernarfon to Pont Croesor near Porthmadog (until 27 May 2010 it terminates at Hafod-y-Llyn). The line is due to be open all the way to Porthmadog in 2011 where it will join up with the Ffestiniog Railway.
The line starts near the historic Caernarfon Castle and then climbs around the foothills of Snowdon, before descending again down towards Beddgelert before passing through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass.
This attraction can be easily visited whilst staying in the Conwy Valley, and is 20 miles (32 km) from Betws-y-Coed as the crow flies (straight line distance). See the routeplanner below for a suggested route and estimated journey time.
